In 2006, the founder of Systematic Solutions designed the first prototype of the USB quiz buzzer, starting with self-use for training sessions, the CUHKAC Astronomy Quiz, and Bible quizzes at local churches. The reaction was immediate: participants were excited by the live projected display showing who buzzed first and each team's score, with feedback that was consistently an enthusiastic "wow!" The success of this trial made us realise there was a genuine need for such a device.

In 2009, Systematic Solutions was founded to provide the USB Quiz Buzzer as a formal product. It was one of the first of its kind on the market, bringing true plug‑and‑play USB quiz hardware into Hong Kong schools and organisations.

Our USB Quiz Buzzer quickly became the standard choice for quiz activities in local schools. Its compact design, simple USB setup, and ability to work seamlessly with projectors and computer screens made it much easier to deploy than traditional quiz equipment. Over time, with hundreds of units deployed, it established itself as a market‑leading quiz buzzer solution in the education sector.

Through ongoing discussions with teachers and organisers, we continuously refined both our software and hardware. We improved the quiz software interface for real classroom use, adopted mechanical keyboard switches for a more precise and satisfying tactile feel, and kept making the product better while maintaining our leadership even as similar solutions later appeared.

As technology evolved and mobile devices became common in classrooms and events, we recognised that quizzes no longer needed to rely on dedicated hardware alone. Rather than simply protect our existing USB Quiz Buzzer, we chose to out‑innovate ourselves by developing a new product that effectively replaced it. We transformed our experience into QuizWare — a browser‑based real‑time quiz platform that is more flexible, more convenient, and freely available to everyone, even though it ultimately surpassed our already successful hardware solution.

Today, the USB Quiz Buzzer has fulfilled its role, so we have decided to stop producing new units while continuing to support all existing customers who still use the system. Its place is now taken by a new generation of product — QuizWare — which we provide free of charge to the community as a way of contributing practical, proven quiz technology back to the wider education world.
